Creation of the CIA Essay Example for Free

Formation of the CIA Essay Regardless of the famous recognitions created by Tom Clancy books and James Bond motion pictures, American insight gathering was not a Cold War innovation: it has existed since the Republics establishing. George Washington sorted out his own insight unit during the Revolutionary War, sending spies behind adversary lines and managing counterespionage tasks. In 1790, only three years after the Constitutional Convention, Congress recognized official right to lead insight tasks and gave then-President Washington a mystery unvouchered subsidize for spies, if the man of his word so satisfies. [1] Intelligence has been a part of American international strategy from that point onward. Progressively significant for our motivations, Americas developing association in world issues during the late nineteenth and mid twentieth hundreds of years prompted the foundation of a few lasting knowledge associations. In 1882, the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) was made and accused of gathering specialized information about outside naval force boats and weapons. After three years, the Department of War set up its own insight unit the Military Intelligence Division (MID). In 1908, the Federal Bureau of Investigation opened its entryways. By the 1930s, the FBI had become the countries superior counterespionage office and had spread into running insight exercises in Latin America.[2] The State Department, in the mean time, had built up an aptitude and a crucial, concentrated on clear data assortment. At last, a few basic occasions started the making of another wartime focal insight office under the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which gathered data, dissected crude knowledge, and did a scope of undercover, incendiary tasks abroad †from purposeful publicity, to undermine, to paramilitary activities. Before the finish of World War II, these five bureaucratic on-screen characters were competing for their own place in the after war knowledge arena.[3] This was not really the equivalent clear War versus Navy Department condition that offered ascend to the National Security Council framework or the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It is as often as possible refered to that previous President Truman never imagined that when he made the CIA it could ever be associated with peacetime undercover tasks. In 1964 Allen Dulles, one of the most persuasive Directors of Central Intelligence in CIA history, tested Trumans comments, saying that despite the fact that Truman couldn't have cared less for filthy Gestapo strategies, the CIA had absolutely performed them during his presidency.[4] This paper will narrative the change of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) into the Central Intelligence Agency. It additionally will look at how and why the peacetime Central Intelligence Agency came to have huge numbers of indistinguishable forces from its wartime predecessor.â specifically this paper will concentrate on the OSS heritage of undercover activities and how the CIA acquired that inheritance. The Creation of CIA During World War II, the OSS employed expansive forces, including undercover insight social occasion and secretive political fighting. William Donovan, Director of the OSS, urged the United States to keep up the OSS or a nearby copy of it in the post-war period. The finish of the war and the token of another mystery association that pursued secretive political fighting, the Nazi Gestapo, impacted President Truman to disintegrate the OSS. Notwithstanding, as the United States continuously entered the Cold War with the Soviet Union, the need of a peacetime insight office got evident. To address the issue, Truman made the Central Intelligence Group (CIG) in 1946.[5] In 1947 Congress changed the CIG into the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The forces of the CIA expanded significantly as U.S. policymakers started to see an expanding danger of Soviet-Communists bowed on global control. By 1952 the CIA firmly looked like the wartime OSS, having a similar position and capacities. Simultaneously the War Crimes Trials were being directed at Nuremberg, American insight officials were subtly talking with high-positioning German officials to decide their potential value in providing knowledge on the Soviet Union. Three basic occasions were noteworthy impacts on the Truman Administration authorities who established and fabricated the CIA. The first was the Japanese astonishment assault on Pearl Harbor, which exhibited that the United States was ill-equipped, not for need of data, but since no contraption existed to channel and break down the enormous volume of accessible data in a manner that could deliver exact insight. This scandalous insight disappointment obviously showed that the security of the United States would be significantly undermined until it built up a peacetime concentrated knowledge agency.[6] The second noteworthy occasion was Stalins seizure of political and military control of a large portion of Eastern Europe disregarding his wartime understanding with the Allied Powers. The battling in Europe had as of late finished when American and remote reports on Soviet exercises in the involved domains started to trouble pioneers in Washington, London, and different capitals. The third occasion concerned the sponsorship by Soviet and Chinese Communists of the North Korean attack of South Korea. This sponsorship uplifted Cold War strains and reinforced the conviction of strategy producers to brace the CIAs capacity to battle socialism. Pearl Harbor outlined the requirement for a peacetime focal insight administration and the Cold War battle with the Soviet Union excited the Truman Administration to make a peacetime knowledge association with semi wartime powers. During World War II, the United States made the principal American incorporated knowledge office, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). On June 13, 1942, a Military Order gave by President Roosevelt made the OSS and conceded it expansive forces that included knowledge investigation, secret assortment, and paramilitary, mental and political warfare.[7] The organization worked under the authority of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It was committed to the matter of treachery, undercover work, counterespionage, and clandestine activity, trademarks that would be given to its replacement, the CIA. The OSS was associated with both insight gathering and surreptitious political fighting. To join both of these abilities in a single office, Donovan alloted various capacities to isolate parts of the OSS. Three of the primary parts of the OSS were Special Operations (SO), Secret Intelligence (SI), and Counterintelligence (X-2).[8] The OSS was amazingly effective in doing incognito tasks. The main significant OSS undercover activity was led in North Africa. A few deaths, supposedly including that of Vichy French Admiral Darlan, were completed by the Morale and Special Operation branches of the Psychological Warfare Division of the OSS. The accomplishment of the activity earned the thriving organization incredible regard and reputation, particularly with respect to secretive action.â â The CIA would before long acquire the OSSs wartime experience and death methods.[9]â The OSS was additionally astoundingly fruitful in setting up and keeping up stealthy specialists in Thailand. The OSS set up a strong establishment for future CIA exercises in the Southeast Asia.[10] Indeed, even from the get-go in World War II, paramilitary and political secret tasks picked up help of elevated level figures, for example, Roosevelt and Eisenhower, and started to obscure the achievements of knowledge collection.â â The OSS accentuation on clandestine paramilitary activities would be one of the essential inheritances gave to the CIA As student of history John Ranelagh noticed, The advantages of incognito paramilitary activity in peacetime would in general be well respected based on a sentimental memory of these wartime encounters of the OSS.[11] Perhaps the most significant heritage the OSS offered to the CIA was that of previous OSS staff who filled the positions of the juvenile CIA with experienced insight officials. Four OSS veterans, Allen Dulles, Richard Helms, William Colby, and William Casey, proceeded to become Directors of the Central Intelligence Agency. All through the war, the OSS end up being important in both insight assortment and incognito tasks, plainly representing the upsides of joining these two abilities in a single office. In 1944 President Franklin Roosevelt mentioned a mystery reminder regarding the matter of an after war insight administration from General Donovan, OSS boss. Donovan admonished President Roosevelt to make a perpetual, overall insight administration after the wars end. Donovan foreseen the Cold War battle: When our adversaries are vanquished the interest will be similarly squeezing for data that will help us in taking care of the issues of peace.[12]â Donovan proceeded to contend that the OSS had the prepared and concentrated faculty required for the undertaking. This ability ought not be dispersed.[13] Donovans proposition was thwarted by the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), J. Edgar Hoover, who needed the FBI to have the elite option to gather and break down insight on a worldwide level. Hoover got a duplicate of Donovans proposition for an after war insight administration and released the top-mystery record to the Chicago Tribune. The paper printed various provocative anecdotes about Donovans plan to make a super-spy arrange. Congressional turmoil, most likely prodded by the terrible press, caused the peacetime focal knowledge organization proposition to be shelved.[14] The mindful Roosevelt was idealistic about Donovans plan, however offered no assurances. After Roosevelts demise and the end of the war, President Truman expressed in a letter to Donovan that said he would exchange those wartime exercises of the Office of Strategic Services which won't be required in time of peace.[15] Truman dreaded Donovans proposed penny

Dr. Kothri says â€Å"the fate of a country is formed inside the four dividers of the class room†. The educator has the best duty of building a country. In a multiethnic and multi-strict nation like India the teacher’s task is exceptionally respectable and praising. The world is separated into tight household dividers. The history is packed with the occasions of incredible men like Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln attempting to serve the individuals and the individuals thusly attempting to extreme and kill them The initial two world fanciful or chronicled wars truly occurred on earth were the Ramayana and the Mahabharata . The rest including all the hundred Kauravs died in the war. In the advanced history we heard a ton about the decimation of life and property because of the two universal wars. The principal world was the consequence of Mussolini and it went on for a long time. The subsequent universal war was the cerebrum offspring of Hitler and it rose to the tremendous extents and proceeded for a significant stretch of six years. The world was separated into two combat areas one supporting England , America and the other Japan and Germany. America utilized the nuclear bomb without precedent for history against Japan in Hiroshima which brought about the destruction of human race in the zone. Indeed, even today the youngsters are supposed to be brought into the world with out appendages or some other physical debilitation. The war among Iran and Iraq went on for almost ten years bringing about a ton of misfortune to life and appendages. The statement of America’s war on Iraq on the unstable ground that Saddam Hussein had put away substance weapons at last finished with the executing of Saddam Hussein. Saddam Hussein may be a military tyrant and he may be answerable for decimation in Iraq. Be that as it may, the manner in which he was hanged was truly inappropriate. Does America reserve the option to meddle with the undertakings of Iraq merits addressing. Truth be told, Saddam Hussein was a nearby political rear entryway for the American president. UK Schools in Anti-Gay Marriage Scandal

UK Schools in Anti-Gay Marriage Scandal The OE Blog Serious questions have been raised about the impartiality and non-political nature of UK schools after claims emerged that some may have encouraged students to sign a petition against same sex marriage. The Department for Education is investigating after it emerged that the Catholic Education Service sent a letter to all Catholic secondary schools, arguing against the legalisation of gay marriage, which is currently being debated in the UK. The letter describes marriage as “a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman” and argues that “neither the Church nor the State has the power to change this fundamental understanding of marriage itself”. Equal rights campaigners have been angered by the rhetoric of the letter, which sets out a “Catholic vision of marriage”, which it subtly implies necessitates the participation of both a male and female partner in order to be successful. But its referral to the importance of marriage as enshrining the production and education of children has been deemed offensive by many activists, as gay adoption is legal and common in the UK. The letter also inadvertently angered many others by referring to “an instinctive understanding that the stability of a marriage provides the best context for the flourishing of their relationship and for bringing up their children.” Many might interpret this as outright criticism of unmarried cohabiting couples, single parents and unmarried mothers and fathers, as it explicitly suggests that their children are likely to suffer as a result of their choices. The main objection to the letter, however, centres not on its contents, but on the fact that it was sent to schools at all, as, by law, politically one-sided arguments are not allowed to be promoted to children by teachers or schools. The idea is that schools should provide a ‘safe space’ for education and development free from the risk of political influence, prejudice or bias. But the Catholic Education Service has tried to circumvent this problem by claiming that “the Catholic Church’s view on the importance of marriage is a religious view, not a political one”. This is a tricky area, as Catholic schools have indeed always been allowed by law to teach sex and relationships education that is in line with the teachings of the church, including stressing the importance of marriage. The furore over schools teaching potentially harmful or prejudiced ideology to children has recently centred on Michael Gove’s pet ‘free school’ scheme, as the government’s ‘laissez-faire’ attitude towards these schools has raised fears that they would be allowed to indoctrinate children with extreme religious and social beliefs. In fact, a similar row erupted in February, when a booklet condemning homosexuality was handed out at Catholic schools in Lancashire. The fear is that the Equality Act of 2010 (which protects students from discrimination on the grounds of their protected characteristics, including sexual orientation) does not extend to the contents of the curriculum, meaning that potentially deeply damaging attitudes such as homophobia might be legally ‘taught’ in the classroom. Those concerned about this politicisation of children in education have been further enraged by the claim, reported by pinknews.co.uk, that one school actually went as far as to stage a presentation about the issue and “urge” pupils to sign the anti-gay marriage petition. The article also includes a quote attributed to Greg Pope, the deputy director of the Catholic Education Service, in which he admits asking schools to “draw attention” to the petition. There are fears that this politicisation of vulnerable students at a time in their lives when they are arguably most open to influence, particularly from trusted authority figures such as teachers, could extend further under the new free school regime. Not to mention the potential knock-on-effect on the marginalisation and persecution of pupils in schools whose sexual orientation does not conform to the attitudes being promoted in RE lessons. It is surely problematic to conform to an Act that protects children from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation on the one hand, and yet allow the teaching of homophobic ideology on the other, as the two must inevitably be inextricably linked. It seems some greater clarification will be needed from the Department for Education to prevent such issues from taking centre stage on the curriculum again in the future.

Meaning Through Language in Heaneys Poetry - Literature Essay Samples

Two of Seamus Heaneys poems that rely on the shifts in language to create meaning are â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg† and â€Å"Casualty†, both from his Field Work (1979) Anthology. Both poems revolve around the effects of sectarian violence in Ireland alluding to the fact that many Irish are not political driven and are collateral damage in the events. Through rich imagery and strong symbolism, Heaney utilises language to reflect on the Troubles in Ireland. The two poems â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg† and â€Å"Casualty† reflect on victims of sectarian violence in Ireland who known personally to Heaney. In â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg†, Heaney tries to give back to his cousin, Colum McCartney, the dignity he lost due to the brutality of his death. McCartney was a victim of a roadside murder as he returned home from a Gaelic football match. Heaney was not actually present at his cousin’s death but visualises an imaginary situation where he ass umes the role of Dante from Purgatorio. Similar to this, Heaney invents memories of Louis O’Neill, the man killed in an Irish Republican Army (IRA) pub bombing. Parallels can be drawn between â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg† and â€Å"Casualty† as they both utilise intertextuality in the poems through the language and imagery evoked in order to create imagined scenarios and reflect on the Troubles of Ireland. The early stanzas in â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg† utilise pace and intertextuality to convey the sense of pursuit during Colum McCartney’s death. The poem opens with an extract from Dante’s Purgatorio â€Å"All around this little island, on the strand grow the tall rushes from the oozy sand† because Heaney chooses to assume the role of Dante in the poem. The first verses, through enjambment, flow with no pause thus creating a slow pace which is similar to how McCartney may have driven at night in a town that was unknown to him. H eaney writes, â€Å"Leaving the white glow of filling stations and a few lonely streetlamps among the fields you climbed the hills towards Newtownhamilton† the use of language evokes a slow pace within poem which contrasts with the next verse. Heaney uses shorter syllables such as â€Å"Goat-beards and dogs’ eyes† to increase the pace and sibilance through â€Å"snapping and squealing† which contrasts to the stillness of the previous verses. The effect of language in this long opening sentence foreshadows the setting and nature of Colum McCartney’s death. The use of language in â€Å"Casualty† is similar to that in â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg† as Heaney juxtaposes calamity with violence through changes in the language. In the construction of the death of Louis O’Neill, Heaney writes â€Å"But my tentative art his turned back watches too† referring to the previous discussion about how he and O’Neill would talk ab out â€Å" lore of the horse and cart or the Provisionals†. This discussion uses a regular rhyme scheme of A, B, A, B creating a calm pace especially through the use of phrases such as â€Å"at closing time would go in waders† The calamity is quickly contrasted in the poem as Heaney states that â€Å"He (O’Neill) was blown to bits†, a very abrupt manner of describing the death. The alliteration is filtered through the stanza with â€Å"blown†, â€Å"bits† and â€Å"obeyed† which represents the sudden manner of O’Neill’s death. Through the shifts and contrasts in language, Heaney is able to create imagined memories of the sudden nature of sectarian violence in Ireland.Language can be used to make reference to other literary works which Heaney often does to inform the reading of his own poems. As mentioned previously, Heaney uses the Purgatorio in â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg† because he assumes the role of Dante d uring the death of his cousin. Literary reference is also made to King Sweeney, an Irish myth about a kind who went mad during battle and turned into bird whilst being pursued by demons: â€Å"Where Sweeney fled before the bloodied heads†. The imagery used in â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg† also evokes similarities to the Michelangelo’s â€Å"La Pieta†, the statue of the Virgin Mary holding Christ after he has come down off the cross. During the imagined scene Heaney writes â€Å"I lift you under the arms and lay you flat† evoking tenderness that was absent during his cousin’s actual death. Although Heaney does not necessarily state the literary or artistic influence, the imagery constructed alludes to other texts informing the reading of Heaney’s works.Poets often have a distinct way of writing and parallels can be drawn between Heaney’s past texts in â€Å"Casualty†. It is known that Louis O’Neill was not actuall y a close friend of Heaney but more an acquaintance. Regardless, Heaney constructs a gentle image of himself and O’Neill on a boat going fishing as this was his profession. The poem speaks of how the two men were â€Å"on the water banked under fog† as â€Å"the screw purling, turning† took them out to sea and Heaney â€Å"tasted freedom with him†. The influence of W.B Yeats’ â€Å"Fisherman† is seen here and also the influence of Heaney’s past work, â€Å"The Tollund Man† where Heaney wrote about the body who was found in the 1950’s that was a sacrifice to the fertility God, Nerphus. In â€Å"The Tolland Man†, Heaney states how â€Å"something of his sad freedom should come to me† resonating the language used in â€Å"Casualty†. Furthermore, the Northern Reticence’s which Heaney often speaks is conveyed in â€Å"Casualty† similar to how it is conveyed in â€Å"The Strand at Lough Begà ¢â‚¬ and the poem â€Å"Whatever You Say, Say Nothing†. The recurring language of the â€Å"sideways talkers†, Irish who â€Å"spoke an old language of conspirators† and spoke in â€Å"smoke signals† is exemplified in many of the texts as Heaney uses symbolic language to mention the North Reticence. The use of recurring language from Heaney’s own work or other literary works is used to enhance the meaning of his poems especially those about the violence in Ireland.Seamus Heaney’s two poems â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg† and â€Å"Casualty† rely on language to create meaning about the sectarian violence in Ireland. Heaney refers to his own literary works and other texts to inform the understanding of his own poems. Through vivid imagery, pace, sounds and representations, â€Å"The Strand at Lough Beg† and â€Å"Casualty† construct partially imagined situations with Colum McCartney and Louis O’Neill in orde r for Heaney to comment on the Troubles in Ireland.

Is The Presidential Election Process Fair - 1640 Words

Is the presidential election process fair? Countries throughout the world elect their leaders using all kinds of methods, and in the United States, we elect our President using an Electoral College. This process is long and complicated, and many believe that it is inequitable and that we should elect our President based off the popular vote. On the contrary, an election based off the popular vote creates a democracy, and goes away with federalism. Our current election process is archaic, and an election by popular vote obviates smaller states from being heard and goes against the foundation of America, however, a system derived from electoral votes per state being distributed to the top two candidates in that state, predicated on that states popular vote, allows each state to be heard, as well as the individual voters. Two hundred and twenty-nine years ago, our founding fathers had debated on which route to take when electing our President. In 1787, the â€Å"Committee of Elevenâ € had come to a compromise, and created the Electoral College, which is a group of individuals elected by the people to cast votes for the presidency. The Electoral College is described as â€Å"a compromise between election of the president by Congress and election by popular vote† (Price). The Important Role of Confederate Women in the American...

The Important Role of Confederate Women in the American Civil War Women in the Confederacy had a great impact on the Civil War. They were thrown into totally different lifestyles--ones that did not include men taking care of the land and other businesses. Women had more control of their lives than ever before. Some took it upon themselves to get involved directly with the war while others just kept the home fires burning. Whatever roles they played, women contributed a multitude of skills to the Civil War effort. The life of a plantation mistress changed significantly once her husband left to join the Southern army. A majority of them stayed right on the land even if they were rich enough to move to a safer place. While there, the†¦show more content†¦Some, however, were much closer to the battlefield than they would have liked to have been. Lucy Breckinridge, a nineteen-year-old girl who lived in the Shenandoah Valley, wrote in her diary how she could hear the cannons over the mountains. Carrie Berry consistently wrote that her family spent a good part of two months in the cellar while her home was being bombarded by shells. Another nineteen-year-old, Sarah Morgan, from Baton Rouge, went to the levees to watch the battles, even though it was against her mothers wishes.5 But some women took it a step further: rather than just watching the men fight for the Southern states, a few women decided to pick up a gun and join the ranks. It is not known how many women actually participated in battle; however, the number seems to be higher than anyone expected. These women played the role of the warrior and literally gave up their gender to fight. One such case is Amy Clark. She dressed like a man to serve in the Confederate army with her husband. After his death, she continued her service and was wounded and captured by the Union. Once the North discovered her true identity, they released her back into the Southern army and insisted that she wear a dress. Some say that Amy Clark may have worn lieutenants bars on her uniform. Like a Flower Free Essays

Alejandra Luna Dr. White English 201 15 September 2011 Like a Flower Love blooms with love, like a flower blooms with water. â€Å"The Chrysanthemums† is a story written by John Steinbeck. We will write a custom essay sample on Like a Flower or any similar topic only for you Order Now This story takes place in 1937, a time when women were not appreciated. Women were supposed to stay home and raise their children. The main character, Elisa Allen, feels distant from her husband Henry. The fact that they didn’t have children, might play a role in that feeling, and is probably the reason she wants to be involved with the farm’s business. â€Å"Her face was lean and strong and her eyes were as clear as water† (Steinbeck 629). Elisa might seem strong on the outside, but deep inside she is fragile like a flower. Though fragile â€Å"her eyes were as clear as water† which means she has very clear what she wants and needs. Just like a flower, she needs care and attention. The point of this story, in my opinion, was to demonstrate the importance of taking care of a woman, not just economically, but emotionally and physically. If you don’t water your flowers they will die, just like love will die without care. Some men think that by providing economically, they are doing enough. A woman might have the biggest and prettiest house, the most expensive car, and the best brand clothes, but that might never be enough to make her happy. We all need someone to love us, someone to hold us at night, to awake to in the morning, someone to have breakfast with and talk to about our sorrows or joys. Money can never replace the need for a companion. Economical support is a marital responsibility, not a sign of love. Furthermore, a woman needs emotional support, she needs someone that listens to her opinion and takes it into consideration, someone who will value her thoughts and ideas. Men have no idea how important it is for a woman to be valued, to be listened to. Many people will agree that communication is a key concept in a relationship, so knowing about her interest will give you a reason to talk about something both of you have knowledge about. It does not matter if it’s not something that interests you, as long as it interests her it will help, it will also bring you close to each other; just like Elisa felt close to the stranger, when he seemed interested in her Chrysanthemum’s. Another good way to support her emotionally is to complement her. Complement her accomplishments, or simply her beauty. Don’t say â€Å"you look so nice† (Steinbeck 635). You look so nice is not the right thing to say, use words like beautiful, radiant, dazzling, etc. Remind her why you chose to marry her and how you promised to honor and respect her for the rest of your life. Simple thing like that, can bring our self-esteem up; it will make us feel wanted and loved. Lastly care for her physically, and by physically, I’m not referring to sex. Sex is important in a relationship, but what I mean is a simple caress, or to get cozy on the couch, and also take her out on a date â€Å"I ought to take you in to dinner oftener. It would be good for both of us. We get so heavy out on the ranch† (Steinbeck 636). Henry noticed that he needed to pay more attention to his wife, he realized they are kept very busy at the ranch and don’t have time for each other. That is very common in marriages; we get carried away with our job or our children and forget how important it is to pay attention to our partner. Also help around with household chores, sometimes men don’t realize how hard we work. In my case for example; I am the first one to get up in the morning, and the last one to go to bed at night; in between that, I have three daughters, chores and school. It makes a woman very happy, when her husband gets involved and helps with the responsibilities. I truly appreciate all my husband does at home, even though he has two jobs, he comes home and helps out when I have to do homework. Taking care of a woman is as important as taking care of your flowers. If you want a beautiful garden, you water it. I you want a beautiful wife, you take care of her. he leaned over the wire fence that protected her flower garden from cattle and dogs and chickens† (Steinbeck 629). You don’t have to put up a wire fence to keep the dogs away from your flower, all you have to do is take care of her economically, to give her comfort; emotionally, to give her peace and physically to keep her young and beautiful. That is the best way to keep the dogs away, and keep her interested in n o one but you. Works Cited Steinbeck, John. â€Å"The Chrysanthemums† Compact Literature: Reading, reacting, writing. Laurie G. Haitian Creole A Review Of Slavery And Creation Essay Example For Students

Haitian Creole: A Review Of Slavery And Creation Essay Christopher Columbus claimed Haiti when he landed there in 1492. Arawak Indians were the original inhabitants of this island when Columbus arrived. Later, the island became a colony of England. Haiti remained virtually unsettled until the mid-17th century, when French colonists, importing African slaves, developed sugar plantations in the north. Under French rule from 1697, Haiti (then called Saint-Domingue) became one of the worlds richest sugar and coffee producers. Soon, Haiti became a land of wealth with the vast use of slavery as their method of production. The rising demand for sugar, coffee, cotton, and tobacco created a greater demand for slaves by other slave trading countries. Spain, France, the Dutch, and English were in competition for the cheap labor needed to work their colonial plantation system producing those lucrative goods. The slave trade was so profitable that, by 1672, the Royal African Company chartered by Charles II of England superseded the other traders and became the richest shipper of human slaves to the mainland of the Americas. The slaves were so valuable to the open market they were eventually called Black Gold. Plantation owners began to be represented in the colony either by their agents or plantation managers, who kept them, informed of production levels, profits, expenses, and the general operations of the plantation. The arrogance and conceit of these agents, or procurers, was that they were surrounded by a multitude of domestic slaves to satisfy every want or need of their own. The greater number of domestic slaves one may have entails a great amount of prestige for these people in their time of the early 1700s and no though was given to the immoral ways and acts taken by their race because they though it not an issue. Plantation owners and those of the like continued to be heavily involved in social aspects of culture and the French way of life. Commuting from their authoritatively constructed world of pleasure in France with wealth and prestige combined with the occasional visits to the plantation for business. The life of a plantation owner and those that surround him is of luxury and negative profusion. The Haitians are almost wholly black, with a culture that is a unique mixture of African and French influences. Haiti was a French colony until 1791 when, fired by the example of the French Revolution, the black slaves revolted, massacred the French landowners and proclaimed the worlds first black republic. As noted, this is the first revolution of slaves against their owners and their success did not go unnoticed. The treatment of slaves around the globe is quite unjust. Because of the colonization of Haiti by France, the importation of African slaves, and the original inhabitants, the Arawak Indians, three languages were spoken on the island. This sparked a need for a common language between the inhabitants of the island. In fact, a large factor in the success of the Haitian Revolution (1804) was the creation of Haitian Creole through African dialects and French. The fact that the majority of the residents spoke their language made their domination even more prevalent. The language was created through the slavery and the need for communication. The people of Haiti were also aware that Creole was spreading to Jamaica as well and their match had been met. Invisible and anxious to be seen by their masters, the privileged few of the black culture and the mass of freed blacks conceived of visibility through the eyes of their masters already uncertain vision of life. The slaves of Haiti rose up against their French and mulatto masters in August of 1791. This marked the beginning of the end of one of the greatest wealth-producing slave colonies the world had ever known. .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 , .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 .postImageUrl , .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 , .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9:hover , .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9:visited , .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9:active { border:0!important; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9:active , .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9 .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf406fcac5e26ecfc31260437728167e9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Racial Profiling Essay The early leaders forming the core of this movement were Boukman Dutty, Jeannot Bullet, Jean-Francois, and George Biassou. Persuasive Speech on Global Warming Essay Example

Persuasive Speech on Global Warming Essay PERSUASIVE SPEECH ON GLOBAL WARMING by: Jennifer Zelmer Introduction: We all know about global warming, but do we really care or try to do at least some of the things that will help stop it or at least slow it down? 1) Over the last century our planets temp. has risen 1 degree. I know that doesnt sound like much but its been enough to melt a lot of the polar ice caps and glaciers. A) The hottest years ever recorded were in the late 1990s and early 2000s. B) In 2007 there was a massive polar ice melt and the amount of glaciers and sea ice has decreased quite a bit since the 70s. This has already caused the sea levels to rise. C) The U. N. panel on climate change projects that by the end of this century the global temps. will have risen 3-10 degrees. Enough to melt the rest of the polar ice caps. And it will probably be to hot for some or all of our local crops to survive. D) And the EPA projects that by the end of this century the sea levels will rise 2 to 3 feet. Flooding 10-thousand square miles in the United States alone. ) Here are some of the things that we as individuals can do to help save our planet. A) They are simpler than you think. You dont have to go protest, or spend lots of money. B) There are lots of little and not so little things we can do around our homes that if done collectively, will make a difference. 3) First plant trees. If not at home find a school, or nursing home, that would let you plant them. Trees, when fully grown help keep the plant cooler. Only buy what you need , ruse whatever you can, like containers and paper, and recycle what you cannot reuse. Its really as simple as that. 4) Th extra heat our homes produce also adversely affects the planet. Choosing A GRE Scored Sample Essay

Choosing A GRE Scored Sample EssayThe most important part of writing a GRE sample essay is choosing a GRE question and a GRE response. Your essay should contain questions that are directly related to the information you have just learned. Make sure the answers you give are direct, but do not ramble on about a subject you are not knowledgeable about. It is also important to always avoid referring to other essays in your essay. If you use it as a reference, it will make your essay look like a waste of time. You want to provide an original and fresh perspective in the essay, and do not copy and paste from other essays.Remember that every sample essay is different, so your essay should be too. You do not want to be trying to fit the essay into the template you created. This will only make it look like you are just throwing together a piece of paper because you don't have a clue what to write. You want to take the essay that you have written and fill in the blanks. The goal is to make it as unique as possible and to make it come from the heart. You want to show that you can write a great essay and that you care about the topic.A lot of people feel that they need to know all about an essay before they write one. This is something that is really important, but it's not the main reason you write an essay. Most students do not need to know the technicalities of how an essay works. In fact, most students do not even need to know how to write a good essay.Essays can range from two hundred to two thousand words, which is a lot of very short pieces. The key is to write as quickly as possible, but still come up with a good argument. The length of the essay is very important, so make sure that you write it fast. In the end, you want your essay to be concise and accurate. The key is to keep your essay to around three hundred to four hundred words, and then make sure you make a great argument. Your objective is to tell a story and present a new perspective. However, you want to st ay true to yourself. When writing a GRE scored sample essay, it is important to take a look at yourself in the mirror and think about your weaknesses. Your essay is your personal statement, so you need to understand why you were given this essay. Also, the essay you write must show your confidence and what you can do for yourself.

The Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle The Golden Triangle is an area covering 367,000 square miles in Southeast Asia where a significant portion of the world’s opium has been produced since the beginning of the twentieth century. This area is centered around the meeting point of the borders that separate Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. The Golden Triangle’s mountainous terrain and distance from major urban centers make it an ideal location for illicit poppy cultivation and transnational opium smuggling.   Until the end of the 20th century, the Golden Triangle was the world’s largest producer of opium and heroin, with Myanmar being the single highest-producing country. Since 1991, the Golden Triangle’s opium production has been outpaced by the Golden Crescent, which refers to an area that traverses the mountainous regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran.   A Brief History of Opium in Southeast Asia Although opium poppies appear to be native to Southeast Asia, the practice of using opium recreationally was introduced to China and Southeast Asia by Dutch traders in the early 18th century. European traders also introduced the practice of smoking opium and tobacco using pipes.   Soon after the introduction of recreational opium consumption to Asia, Britain replaced the Netherlands as China’s primary European trade partner. According to historians, China became the primary target of British opium traders for financial reasons. In the 18th century, there was high demand in Britain for Chinese and other Asian goods, but there was little demand for British goods in China. This imbalance forced British merchants to pay for Chinese goods in hard currency rather than British goods. In order to make up for this loss of cash, British merchants introduced opium to China with the hope that high rates of opium addiction would generate large amounts of cash for them. In response to this strategy, Chinese rulers outlawed opium for non-medicinal use, and in 1799, Emperor Kia King banned opium and poppy cultivation completely. Nonetheless, British smugglers continued to bring opium into China and the surrounding areas. Following the British victories against China in the Opium Wars in 1842 and 1860, China was forced to legalize opium. This foothold allowed British traders to expand the opium trade to Lower Burma when British forces began to arrive there in 1852. In 1878, after knowledge of the negative effects of opium consumption had thoroughly circulated throughout the British Empire, British Parliament passed the Opium Act, prohibiting all British subjects, including those in Lower Burma, from consuming or producing opium. Nonetheless, illegal opium trade and consumption continued to take place. The Birth of the Golden Triangle In 1886, the British Empire expanded to include Upper Burma, where the modern Kachin and Shan states of Myanmar are located. Nestled in rugged highlands, the populations that inhabited Upper Burma lived relatively beyond the control of British authorities. Despite British efforts to retain a monopoly on the opium trade and regulate its consumption, opium production and smuggling took root in these rugged highlands and fueled much of the region’s economic activity.   In Lower Burma, on the other hand, British efforts to secure a monopoly on opium production succeeded by the 1940s. Similarly, France retained similar control over opium production in the lowland regions of its colonies in Laos and Vietnam. Nonetheless, the mountainous regions surrounding the convergence point of the Burma, Thailand, and Laos borders continued to play a major role in the global opium economy. The Role of the United States Following Burma’s independence in 1948, several ethnic separatist and political militia groups emerged and became embroiled in conflict with the newly formed central government. At the same time, the United States actively sought to forge local alliances in Asia in its effort to contain the spread of communism. In exchange for access and protection during anti-communist operations along China’s southern border, the United States supplied arms, ammunition and air transport for the sale and production of opium to insurgent groups in Burma and ethnic minority groups in Thailand and Laos. This led to a surge in the availability of heroin from the Golden Triangle in the United States and established opium as a major source of funding for separatist groups in the region. During the American war in Vietnam, the CIA trained and armed a militia of ethnic Hmong people in northern Laos to wage an unofficial war against northern Vietnamese and Lao communists. Initially, this war disrupted the economy of the Hmong community, which was dominated by opium cash-cropping. However, this economy was soon stabilized by the CIA-backed militia under Hmong general Vang Pao, who was given access to his own aircraft and permission to continue opium smuggling by his American case handlers, preserving the Hmongs’ access to heroin markets in southern Vietnam and elsewhere. Opium trade continues to be a major feature of Hmong communities in the Golden Triangle as well as in the United States. Khun Sa: King of the Golden Triangle By the 1960s, several rebel groups based in northern Burma, Thailand, and Laos supported their operations through the illegal opium trade, including a faction of the Kuomintang (KMT), which had been expelled from China by the Communist Party. The KMT funded its operations by expanding the opium trade in the region.   Khun Sa, born in Chan Chi-fu in 1934 to a Chinese father and Shan mother, was an uneducated  youth in the Burmese countryside who formed his own gang in the Shan State and sought to break into the opium business. He partnered with the Burmese government, which armed Chan and his gang, essentially outsourcing them to fight the KMT and Shan nationalist militias in the region. In exchange for fighting as the Burmese government’s proxy in the Golden Triangle, Chan was permitted to continue trading opium. However, over time, Chan grew friendlier with Shan separatists, which aggravated the Burmese government, and in 1969, he was imprisoned. Upon his release five years later, he adopted the Shan name Khun Sa and devoted himself, at least nominally, to the cause of Shan separatism. His Shan nationalism and success in drug production garnered the support of many Shan, and by the 1980s, Khun Sa had amassed an army of over 20,000 soldiers, which he dubbed the Mok Tai Army, and established a semi-autonomous fiefdom in the hills of the Golden Triangle near the town of Baan Hin Taek. It is estimated that at this point, Khun Sa controlled over half of the opium in the Golden Triangle, which in turn constituted half of the world’s opium and 45% of the opium that came to the United States. Khun Sa was described by historian Alfred McCoy as â€Å"the only Shan warlord who ran a truly professional smuggling organization capable of transporting large quantities of opium.† Khun Sa was also notorious for his affinity for media attention, and he frequently played host to foreign journalists in his semi-autonomous narco-state. In a 1977 interview 1977 with the now-defunct Bangkok World, he called himself the â€Å"King of the Golden Triangle.† Until the 1990s, Khun Sa and his army ran an international opium operation with impunity. However, in 1994, his empire collapsed due to attacks from the rival United Wa State Army and from the Myanmar Armed Forces. Furthermore, a faction of the Mok Tai Army abandoned Khun Sa and formed the Shan State National Army, declaring that Khun Sa’s Shan nationalism was merely a front for his opium business. To avoid punishment by the government upon his impending capture, Khun Sa surrendered on the condition that he be protected from extradition to the US, which had a $2 million bounty on his head. It is reported that Khun Sa also received a concession from the Burmese government to operate a ruby mine and a transport company, which allowed him to live out the rest of his life in luxury in Burmas main city, Yangon. He died in 2007 at the age of 74. Khun Sa’s Legacy: Narco-development Myanmar expert Bertil Lintner claims that Khun Sa was, in reality, an illiterate frontman for an organization dominated by ethnic Chinese from Yunnan Province and that this organization still operates in the Golden Triangle today. Opium production in the Golden Triangle continues to fund the military operations of several other separatist groups. The largest of these groups is the United Wa State Army (UWSA), a force of over 20,000 troops nestled in the semi-autonomous Wa Special Region. The UWSA is reported to be the largest drug-producing organization in Southeast Asia. The UWSA, along with the  Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) in neighboring Kokang Special Region, have also expanded their drug enterprises to the production of methamphetamine known in the region as yaa baa, which is easier and cheaper to manufacture than heroin.   Like Khun Sa, the leaders of these narco-militias can be seen as both business entrepreneurs, community developers, as well as agents of the Myanmar government. Nearly everyone in the Wa and Kokang regions is involved in the drug trade in some capacity, which supports the argument that drugs are an essential component of the development of these regions, offering an alternative to poverty.   Criminologist Ko-Lin Chin writes that the reason why a political solution to drug production in the Golden Triangle has been so elusive is because â€Å"the difference between a state-builder and drug kingpin, between benevolence and greed, and between public funds and personal wealth† have become difficult to delineate. In a context in which conventional agriculture and local business is stunted by conflict and in which competition between the United States and China deter long-term successful development interventions, drug production and smuggling have become these communities’ path toward development. Throughout the Wa and Kokang special regions, drug profits have been funneled into road construction, hotels, and casino towns, giving rise to what Bertil Lintner calls â€Å"narco-development.† Towns such as Mong La attract over 500,000 Chinese vice tourists every year, who come to this mountainous region of the Shan State to gamble, eat endangered animal speci es and partake in the seedy nightlife.    Statelessness in the Golden Triangle Since 1984, conflict in Myanmar’s ethnic minority states has driven approximately 150,000 Burmese refugees across the border into Thailand, where they have been living in nine UN-recognized refugee camps along the Thai-Myanmar border. These refugees have no legal right to employment in Thailand, and according to Thai law, undocumented Burmese found outside of the camps are subject to arrest and deportation. The provision of temporary shelter in the camps by the Thai Government has remained unchanged over the years, and limited access to higher education, livelihoods and other opportunities for refugees has raised alarm within the UN High Commission for Refugees that many refugees will resort to negative coping mechanisms for survival. Hundreds of thousands of members of Thailand’s indigenous â€Å"hill tribes† constitute another major stateless population in the Golden Triangle. Their statelessness renders them ineligible for state services, including formal education and the right to work legally, leading to a situation in which the average hill tribe member makes less than $1 per day. This poverty leaves hill tribe people vulnerable to exploitation by human traffickers, who recruit poor women and children by promising them jobs in northern Thai cities such as Chiang Mai. Today, one in three sex workers in Chiang Mai comes from a hill tribe family. Girls as young as eight years old are confined to brothels where they may be forced to service up to 20 men per day, putting them at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Older girls are often sold overseas, where they are stripped of their documentation and left powerless to escape. Although the government of Thailand has enacted progressive laws to combat human trafficking, the lack of citizenship of these hill tribes leaves this population at disproportionately elevated risk of exploitation. Human rights groups such as The Thailand Project assert that education for the hill tribes is the key to solving the human trafficking issue in the Golden Triangle.
